Teen numbers as ten-and-ones
Compose/decompose teen numbers 11–19 as “ten ones and some further ones” (18 = 10 + 8) — the bridge to place value.
Teen numbers — eleven through nineteen — are the first place value hides in plain sight. Each one is simply one full group of ten and some more ones: 18 = 10 + 8.
What it means
To count a pile of things, you can count them one at a time: 1, 2, 3, and so on. But once a pile gets past ten, keeping loose count is slow and easy to lose. The trick that runs through all of arithmetic is to bundle: gather ten ones into a single group called a ten, then count the leftovers.
A teen number is exactly this idea in its simplest form. Take 16 counters. Slide ten of them together into one bundle. Six are left over. So 16 is “one ten and six ones”, which we write as 10 + 6. The number didn’t change; you only reorganised it so its structure shows.
Reading this in the words we say is the tricky part. “Sixteen” means six-and-ten, but it says the ones first and hides the ten inside “-teen”. “Eighteen” is eight-and-ten. The maths is always the same shape: one ten, then the ones. This is the seed of place value — the idea that a digit’s position tells you whether it counts ones, tens, hundreds, and so on. Master it here, with a single ten, and the whole number system opens up.

The generative-art connection
Bundling is something you can see. In dot-multiplier (or any ten-frame tool), make one tidy group of ten dots and a small separate group of extra dots — the artwork is literally the number: a ten and some ones sitting side by side. Change the extras from 1 to 9 and watch 11 grow into 19 without the ten ever moving. That steady, unchanging block of ten, with a shifting fringe of ones beside it, is the picture of place value: one part holds still, the other part varies, and together they make the whole. Common misconceptions
- “Sixteen starts with six, so it’s mostly six.” The word says the ones first, but the ten is the bigger part. Building it from counters — ten together, six loose — fixes the picture.
- Writing the digits backwards, e.g. 61 for sixteen. We say “six-teen” but write ten first:
1then6. Lay the ten-bundle down before the ones to match the writing. - Treating a teen as a heap of separate ones (e.g. counting 13 as thirteen loose things). The point is not to count to 13 one by one — it’s to see the ten as a single made object, so the leftovers are all that remains to count.

Spot the mistake: Sam says 'Sixteen is written 61 because we say six first.' Is Sam right? What is the correct way to write sixteen?

Sam is not right. We say 'six-teen' but write the ten first: `16`, not `61`. `61` would be sixty-one — six tens and one one.
