Ordinal numbers

Ordinal numbers & rank (“twentieth”; identify a position in an ordered list).

Counting tells you how many things there are. Ordinal numbers tell you which position something holds in an order — first, second, third, and so on.

What it means

A cardinal number answers “how many?” — three apples, seven children, twenty cars. An ordinal number answers “which one, in order?” — the third apple, the seventh child, the twentieth car.

The difference only matters once things are lined up. If five runners cross a finish line, the whole group has a count of five (cardinal), but each runner also has a place: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th (ordinal). The same numbers we count with become position labels once there is a first, a next, and a last.

In English most ordinals are made by adding -th to the counting word: four → fourth, six → sixth, ten → tenth, twenty → twentieth, hundred → hundredth. First, second and third are irregular and must be learned by heart (not “oneth”, “twoth”, “threeth”). A handful of others tweak their spelling before the -th — five → fifth, eight → eighth, nine → ninth, twelve → twelfth — and words ending in -y swap it for -ie (twenty → twentieth, thirty → thirtieth). Once you know these, the rest is reliable: for multi-digit numbers, only the final digit decides the ending, so reuse first/second/third there — 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th…

Written short, ordinals take a numeral plus the last two letters of the word: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 11th, 21st, 100th.

Two ideas to hold on to:

  • Ordinals need a starting point and a direction. “Third from the left” and “third from the right” are different seats. Always agree where counting begins.
  • Position and count are linked: the person in 3rd place has exactly 2 people ahead of them. The nth item has n − 1 items before it.

Worked examples

1. Reading a queue. Six people wait at a bus stop, in order A, B, C, D, E, F.

2. From position back to count. “Maya finished 20th.” How many runners were ahead of her? The nth place has n − 1 people in front, so 20 − 1 = 19 runners finished before Maya.

3. Same objects, two orders. Line up the letters of CAT: C is 1st, A is 2nd, T is 3rd. Now reverse the direction — counting from the right, T is 1st, A is 2nd, C is 3rd. The objects never moved; only the starting point did.

The generative-art connection

Ordinals are about position in a sequence, and generative art is full of sequences you can point at. Open dot-multiplier: a single dot multiplies into a ring of dots arranged around a circle. Because they sit in a fixed order, you can name them — the 1st arm, the 5th arm, the 12th — and mark “every 3rd dot” to see a pattern emerge inside the ring. The art gives the count a shape, so “the 7th one” becomes something your finger can land on.

The same move drives more advanced art: a spiral where the nth point is placed a step further out and a fixed angle around (the sunflower / golden-angle spiral) is nothing but ordinals turned into a picture — point number 1, then 2, then 3, each in its ordered place. Colouring “the 10th, 20th, 30th…” point differently makes the ordinal structure visible as bands of colour.

Common misconceptions

  • “Twentieth” is not “twoth”. Ordinals grow from the whole counting word: twenty → twentieth, thirty → thirtieth. Only first, second, third break the -th rule.
  • Off-by-one. Being in nth place does not mean n people are ahead — it means n − 1 are. The 1st person has nobody in front.
  • Forgetting the direction. “The third house” is ambiguous until everyone agrees which end to count from. Fix the starting point before naming a position.

What a learner should be able to solve

The benchmark for mastering this concept — the problems a child at this stage is expected to be able to work through.

  1. Say and write the ordinal for each of these positions: the `12`th, the `20`th, the `9`th, and the `100`th. Write both the word and the short form (like `1`st).

    Answer

    12th = twelfth, 20th = twentieth, 9th = ninth, 100th = hundredth. All spelled correctly, including the tricky ones (twelfth drops the 've', ninth drops the 'e', twentieth swaps -ty for -tieth).

  2. Fifteen children stand in a line. Ravi is `15`th (the very last). Sofia is `1`st. How many children are standing between Sofia and Ravi?

    Answer

    `13`. Sofia is 1st and Ravi is 15th, so the children in positions 2nd through 14th are between them: `14 - 2 + 1 = 13` children.

  3. Twelve stickers are placed in a row. Counting from the LEFT, the star sticker is `4`th. If you count from the RIGHT instead, which position is the star?

    Answer

    `9`th from the right. There are 12 stickers; a sticker that is 4th from the left has `12 - 4 = 8` stickers to its right, so it is the 9th from the right (`12 - 4 + 1 = 9`).

    Art hook A strip of 12 tiles with a left-arrow and right-arrow toggle; flipping the direction relabels every tile with its ordinal from that end, so the star's two names appear together.

  4. In a race, Ana finished `7`th and Leo finished `10`th. How many places apart were they, and who was faster?

    Answer

    `3` places apart (`10 - 7 = 3`). Ana was faster because 7th comes before 10th — a smaller ordinal means finishing earlier.

    Art hook A finish-line strip where two runner dots snap to their ordinal slots; an arc bridges them and shows the gap of 3 slots.

  1. Five ducks swim in a line. Point to the FIRST duck and the LAST duck. If there are `5` ducks, what position is the last one?

    Answer

    The first duck is in `1`st place; the last duck is the `5`th. With 5 ducks in a line, the last position equals the count, so it is 5th.

  2. Match each counting word to its ordinal: three → ?, five → ?, eight → ?, ten → ?

    Answer

    three → third, five → fifth, eight → eighth, ten → tenth. (Third is irregular; fifth and eighth change spelling before -th.)

  3. Write these positions the short way (with numerals): first, second, third, fourth, twenty-first.

    Answer

    1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 21st. (21 reuses 'first' → 21st because its last digit is 1.)

    Art hook A dial that spins to any number 1-100 and prints its short ordinal, so kids see 21st, 22nd, 23rd share endings with 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

  4. Seven cars are parked in a row. The red car is `3`rd. How many cars are parked in FRONT of the red car?

    Answer

    `2` cars. The nth position has `n - 1` in front, so `3 - 1 = 2` cars are ahead of the red car.

    Art hook A row of 7 car-dots; tap the 3rd and the app shades the 2 dots ahead of it a different colour.

  5. A tower is built with coloured blocks from the bottom up: red (bottom), blue, green, yellow, purple (top). Which block is `4`th from the bottom? Which is `2`nd from the top?

    Answer

    4th from the bottom is yellow. 2nd from the top is yellow too (purple is 1st from the top, yellow is 2nd). Both describe the same block.

    Art hook A vertical stack of 5 colour blocks with a 'count from bottom' / 'count from top' switch that relabels each block's ordinal.

  6. Spot the mistake. Sam says: 'I came `8`th in the race, so `8` people finished before me.' Is Sam right? Explain.

    Answer

    Sam is wrong. Coming 8th means `8 - 1 = 7` people finished before him — the 8th person has 7 ahead, not 8. The 1st person has nobody ahead.

    Art hook A finish line where placing a dot at slot n auto-counts and highlights the n-1 dots ahead, disproving the off-by-one guess.

  7. Count on in your head: which ordinal comes right after nineteenth? And right after twentieth?

    Answer

    After nineteenth comes twentieth (20th). After twentieth comes twenty-first (21st).

    Art hook A ring of dots you step around one at a time; each tap announces the next ordinal, wrapping the sequence into a visible loop.

  8. Ten flags stand in a row. Counting from the LEFT, the green flag is `6`th. Counting from the RIGHT, which position is it?

    Answer

    `5`th from the right. With 10 flags, `10 - 6 + 1 = 5`, so the green flag is 5th from the right.

    Art hook A row of 10 flag-dots with a left/right toggle; the green flag keeps both of its ordinal labels shown on either side.

  9. Write the ordinal words for `11`, `12`, `20`, and `30`. Watch out — some are tricky!

    Answer

    11th = eleventh, 12th = twelfth, 20th = twentieth, 30th = thirtieth. (Twelfth drops the 've'; the -ty words swap to -tieth.)

    Art hook A spelling-reveal wheel: choose a number and the ordinal word builds letter by letter, spotlighting the changed part in a bright hue.

  10. A pattern of dots is drawn around a circle: dot 1, dot 2, dot 3, ... up to dot 12, like the numbers on a clock. Colour every `3`rd dot (the 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th). How many dots do you colour?

    Answer

    `4` dots: the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th. Every 3rd dot out of 12 gives `12 / 3 = 4` coloured dots, forming a square inside the ring.

    Art hook 12 dots evenly on a circle (clock positions); a slider picks 'every kth' and lights those ordinals, drawing a star polygon as k changes.

  11. There are `20` people in a queue for ice cream. You are `20`th (the last). How many people are in front of you? If `3` people leave from the front, what position are you now?

    Answer

    `19` people are in front (`20 - 1 = 19`). After 3 people leave the front, you move up 3 places to `17`th.

    Art hook A queue of 20 dots; a 'serve' button removes the front dot and every remaining dot's ordinal ticks down by one, animating your climb.

  12. Open a challenge: line up the letters of your first name and give each its ordinal position from the left. Then say which letter is LAST and what position that is.

    Answer

    Answers vary by name. Success = each letter gets a correct ordinal (1st, 2nd, 3rd, ...) with no gaps or repeats, and the last letter's position equals the number of letters in the name.

    Art hook Type a name; each letter drops into an ordered row of dots, labelled 1st, 2nd, 3rd..., with the final letter's ordinal matching the letter count.
