Collect, sort & count data; tally charts; pictograms; block/bar charts; simple & double-entry tables; interpret (“most/least/how many more”).
A chart or table is a picture of counted data: you gather information, sort it into groups, count each group, and lay the counts out so the pattern jumps straight to the eye.
What it means
Data just means facts you collect — the colours of cars in a car park, the pets your classmates own, the weather each day for a week. On its own a pile of facts is hard to read, so we sort it into categories (groups that are alike) and count how many fall in each.
A tally chart is the counting tool: each item you find gets one mark, |, and every fifth mark is struck diagonally across the previous four to close a gate worth 5. Groups of five are easy to add up, so a full gate followed by ||| means 5 + 3 = 8.
Once counted, the totals go into a picture:
- A pictogram draws one small symbol per item (three fish symbols = 3 fish), or lets one symbol stand for several — a key tells you which (one fish = 2 fish).
- A block or bar chart turns each count into a column: the taller the bar, the bigger the count. All bars share one scale up the side.
- A table lays counts out in labelled rows and columns. A double-entry (two-way) table crosses two categories at once — for example, rows for cats/dogs and columns for boys/girls, so each cell answers both questions together.
Interpreting a chart means reading answers back out: which group has the most (tallest bar, longest tally), which the least, and how many more one group has than another — a subtraction between two counts.
Worked examples
1 — Tally to bar chart. Twelve children name a favourite fruit:

A closed gate is the four uprights with a fifth mark struck across them — worth 5. So Apple’s “gate + 2” reads 5 + 2 = 7. (Plain text can’t draw the diagonal fifth stroke, which is exactly why we count gates in fives.) Bars would rise 7, 3, 2. Apples are the most; pears the least; apples beat bananas by 7 − 3 = 4.
2 — Pictogram with a key. Key: one apple symbol = 2 apples. A row of three symbols means 3 × 2 = 6 apples. Half a symbol would mean one apple.
3 — Double-entry table. Pets in the class:

The generative-art connection
A bar chart already is generative art with one rule: height = count. Common misconceptions
- Miscounting the tally. The fifth mark crosses the four before it; it is not a sixth item. A full gate is 5, not 6.
- Ignoring the key. In a pictogram one symbol may stand for many. Always read the key before you count — three symbols at ”= 2 each” is 6, not 3.
- Reading bar height as the label. A bar’s value comes from the scale up the side, not from how the bar looks next to its neighbour. Line your eye across to the axis to read the true count.

A tally chart shows how many birds visited a garden feeder in one week. Robin has one full gate and `|||`. Sparrow has two full gates and `|`. Blackbird has `||||` (four marks, with no fifth mark struck across them). Write the count for each bird. Which bird came most, and how many more of that bird than blackbirds?
Answer
A full gate is worth `5`. Robin `= 5 + 3 = 8`, Sparrow `= 5 + 5 + 1 = 11`, Blackbird `= 4`. Sparrow came most (`11`). Sparrows beat blackbirds by `11 − 4 = 7`.

A pictogram of books read uses a key: one book symbol `= 2` books. Anya's row has `4` symbols. Ben's row has `2` symbols and a half symbol. How many books did each read, and how many more did Anya read than Ben?
Answer
With the key, one symbol `= 2` books and a half symbol `= 1` book. Anya `= 4 × 2 = 8`. Ben `= 2 × 2 + 1 = 5`. Anya read `8 − 5 = 3` more than Ben.

Green is least (`3`). Blue and Yellow tie for most (`9` each). Blue beats Green by `9 − 3 = 6`.

A two-way table shows lunches. Rows are Year 3 and Year 4; columns are Sandwich and Hot dinner. Year 3: Sandwich `7`, Hot `5`. Year 4: Sandwich `4`, Hot `8`. How many Year 4 children had a hot dinner? How many children had a sandwich in total? How many children are in the table altogether?
Answer
Year 4 hot dinner `= 8`. Sandwiches total `= 7 + 4 = 11`. Altogether `= 7 + 5 + 4 + 8 = 24`.

Spot the mistake. A friend counts a single full gate (four upright marks with a fifth mark struck across them) and says it means `6`, because they counted the diagonal stroke as an extra mark. What did they do wrong, and what is the real count?
Answer
The diagonal stroke is the 5th mark that closes the gate — it is not a 6th item. A full gate is worth `5`, not `6`. So the real count is `5`.

Open-ended. Look around your room and pick something to count in two or three groups (types of book, colours of clothes, shapes of objects). Collect the data with a tally, then say which group has the most and how many more it has than the smallest group.

Answers vary. Success: a correct tally for each group, correctly identifying the largest group, and a correct subtraction for 'how many more' (largest − smallest).
