Fluency thresholds
Assessable fluency targets: FR mental-calc targets (CP 9 / CE1 12 / CE2 15 in 3 min; 12 ×-fill-ins/min by CE2); EN Year-4 MTC (25 questions, 6 s each).
A fluency threshold is a concrete, checkable target for how quickly and accurately a child can recall or compute a basic fact — a line drawn to say “this should now be automatic.”
What it means
Fluency is the ability to produce an answer quickly, accurately, and without visible effort. It sits above merely being able to work something out. A child who counts on fingers to reach 6 × 7 = 42 can get the right answer but is not yet fluent; a child who simply knows 42 has that fact automatic — retrievable in under a second, freeing attention for harder problems built on top of it.
A threshold is the level at which we agree fluency has been reached. Because “fast enough” is vague, curricula set numbers: a count of correct answers within a fixed time. These make fluency assessable — you can measure whether a child has crossed the line, rather than guessing.
Two national systems make this precise:
- France (calcul mental). Mental-calculation targets rise each year: roughly 9 correct answers in 3 minutes in CP (age 6), 12 in CE1, 15 in CE2 — plus, by CE2, filling in about 12 missing factors per minute (given
3 × ? = 12, answer4). - England (Multiplication Tables Check). A national on-screen test in Year 4 (age 8–9): 25 questions, each a single times-table fact, with only 6 seconds to answer each. It checks recall of the tables up to
12 × 12.
The point of a threshold is not speed for its own sake. Automatic facts are the building blocks of everything later — long multiplication, fractions, division — so a child fluent in the basics spends their thinking on the new idea, not on re-deriving old ones.
Worked examples
1. Fluent vs. not. Asked 8 × 4, one child recites “8, 16, 24, 32” (four seconds); another says “32” instantly. Both are correct; only the second is fluent. The MTC’s 6-second window is designed to separate these two.
2. Counting toward a French target. In CE1 a child answers these in 3 minutes:
7 + 5 = 12 ✓
6 × 2 = 12 ✓
10 − 4 = 6 ✓
... 12 correct → threshold met
3. A fill-in. ? × 6 = 30. Working backwards from the 6 table: 5 × 6 = 30, so ? = 5. Twelve of these a minute is the CE2 target.
The generative-art connection
Fluency is about the times-table facts themselves, and those facts hide a beautiful shape. Take a circle with points 0–9 (or 0–any number) around it, pick a table — say ×2 — and draw a chord from each point n to point 2n. The ×2 pattern traces a cardioid, a heart-shaped curve; ×3 gives a nephroid with two lobes; each table has its own signature. This is The Coding Train’s Times-Tables Cardioid, and it turns rote practice into a picture you make by knowing the table. In mathartcademy a child could “unlock” the curve one fact at a time — the art literally completes as recall becomes fluent, so the threshold is something you can watch yourself cross.
Common misconceptions
- Fast equals fluent, always. A child can be fast and wrong by guessing. Thresholds count correct answers within the time, not answers alone — accuracy comes first.
- Fluency replaces understanding. Memorising
6 × 7 = 42is only safe once a child knows it means six groups of seven. Automaticity is meant to sit on top of understanding, not instead of it. - A missed threshold means failure. These are checkpoints, not verdicts. A child below the line simply needs more practice with those specific facts; fluency is trainable, and the target shows exactly what to train.
What a learner should be able to solve
The benchmark for mastering this concept — the problems a child at this stage is expected to be able to work through.

Show the difference between working something out and just knowing it: answer `6 × 7`, `8 × 4`, and `9 × 6` OUT LOUD. Each answer should come almost instantly — under about 6 seconds, with no counting up — and all three must be correct.
Answer
`6 × 7 = 42`, `8 × 4 = 32`, `9 × 6 = 54`. Success = all three correct AND each recalled quickly with no visible counting. This is the England Year-4 MTC standard (6 seconds per fact) shown on single facts.
Art hook Three dots evenly spaced on a circle. A fact answered fast-and-correct sends a chord shooting to its product point, building a small star; a slow or wrong answer leaves that chord missing — you can SEE fluency completing the shape (the times-tables-cardioid idea, unlocked fact by fact).

Answer these ten fill-ins as fast as you can while staying correct: `3 × ? = 21`, `? × 5 = 45`, `7 × ? = 56`, `? × 8 = 48`, `9 × ? = 63`. Try to keep up a pace of about `12` correct fill-ins per minute.

Art hook A lane of blank boxes scrolling past. Each correct missing-factor fills its box with that many dots arranged as an array (e.g. 7 → seven dots); a per-minute counter shows whether you held the pace of 12, turning the drill into a scrolling dot-mosaic.

Take a full 3-minute mental-maths sheet that mixes `+`, `−` and `×` facts. Count how many you get CORRECT. Can you reach at least `15` correct in the 3 minutes?

Success = 15 or more correct answers in 3 minutes (France's CE2 threshold; 12 correct meets CE1). Only correct answers count — accuracy first, then speed.
Art hook A number-line racetrack with a finish flag at position 15. Each correct answer moves your dot one step along the line; a countdown ring drains the 3 minutes. Reaching 15 before the ring empties unlocks a burst-of-dots reward pattern.

Explain in your own words: a friend answers `7 × 6` correctly but takes 20 seconds, counting up in 7s. Have they met a fluency threshold like the Year-4 check? Why or why not — and what should they do next?
Answer
No. `7 × 6 = 42` is correct, but 20 seconds is far over the 6-second window, so it isn't fluent yet — they're computing, not recalling. Next step: practise that one fact until it becomes automatic. Good answers show that a threshold measures fast AND correct recall, and point to exactly what to train.
Art hook A split screen: a 'counting-up' dot crawls tick by tick and crosses the 6-second mark flashing 'not yet'; an 'automatic' dot lands instantly and glows 'fluent'. The child watches which side of the 6-second line their answer falls on.

Say each answer out loud the instant you read it — don't count up. `2 × 5`, `10 × 3`, `5 × 4`. Have a friend time you: did each answer come in under about 2 seconds?

`2 × 5 = 10`, `10 × 3 = 30`, `5 × 4 = 20`. Success = all three correct AND each spoken almost immediately, with no finger-counting. This shows the difference between knowing a fact and working it out.
Art hook Three dots on a horizontal number line. Answer a fact in under 2 seconds and its dot lights green and jumps to its product position on the line; a slow answer keeps the dot grey — a 'fluency meter' you fill up as recall gets faster.

Which of these two children is FLUENT at `6 × 3`? Child A whispers '6, 12, 18' then says '18'. Child B says '18' straight away. Both are correct — who is fluent, and why?

Child B is fluent. Both got the right answer `18`, but fluency means recalling it instantly, without working it out. Child A is skip-counting (still building the fact); Child B has it automatic.

Fill in the missing number, working backwards from a table you know: `4 × ? = 20`, `? × 3 = 27`, `8 × ? = 40`.

`4 × 5 = 20` so `? = 5`; `9 × 3 = 27` so `? = 9`; `8 × 5 = 40` so `? = 5`. Missing-factor fill-ins like these are France's CE2 fluency target (about 12 correct per minute).
Art hook A grid where each row is a fact with a blank box. Type the missing factor and the box blooms into that many dots arranged as an array (rows × columns), confirming the product visually.

Here is a short mental-maths burst, France style. How many can you answer correctly? `3 + 8`, `9 × 2`, `15 − 7`, `4 × 5`, `6 + 6`, `10 × 4`, `12 − 5`. On a full 3-minute sheet like this, the CE1 target is 12 correct.

`11, 18, 8, 20, 12, 40, 7` — all seven correct. On a full 3-minute sheet, reaching 12 correct meets France's CE1 threshold and 15 meets CE2 (these seven are just a warm-up sample, not the whole target).

England's Year-4 check gives you 6 seconds per question. For `7 × 8`, is 6 seconds long enough to COUNT the answer up in 7s (7, 14, 21, …)? Roughly how many numbers would you have to say, and what does that tell you about needing the fact automatic?

Counting up in 7s to reach `56` means saying 8 numbers (7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56) — hard to do accurately in 6 seconds. So the check is really testing whether `7 × 8 = 56` is automatic, not whether you can count fast.
Art hook A dot travels around a 6-tick ring (one tick per second). On each tick a 7 stacks up (7, 14, 21…) racing to reach 56 before the dot completes the ring — counting only just makes it, while a pre-lit '56' would have finished at tick zero, showing recall wins with time to spare.

Spot the mistake. A child says 'I'm fluent at my 4-times table!' — then answers `4 × 6 = 28`. Fast, but wrong. Why does speed alone NOT prove fluency?

`4 × 6 = 24`, not 28. Being fast isn't enough — fluency means fast AND correct. Thresholds count only correct answers, so accuracy comes first; a quick wrong guess doesn't cross the line.
Art hook A dot that fires quickly but lands on the wrong number-line position flashes red and bounces back to its start; a correct-and-quick dot locks in gold at its spot. Speed without accuracy visibly gets rejected.

Pick a table you find hard (say the `8` table). List every fact in it you can already say instantly, and every one you still have to work out. Which 2 or 3 facts should you practise next?

Answers vary per child. Success = an honest split into 'automatic' vs 'still working out', then naming the 2–3 slow facts to drill (often `8 × 6`, `8 × 7`, `8 × 8`). Knowing exactly what to practise is the whole point of a threshold.
Art hook A 12-dot ring for the 8 table. Tap each dot green (automatic) or grey (still slow). The grey dots pulse gently as your personal 'practice list', and the ring's pattern completes as they turn green over several days.

Time yourself on these ten facts and count how many you get right: `6 × 4`, `7 × 3`, `9 × 5`, `8 × 2`, `4 × 4`, `12 × 3`, `7 × 7`, `6 × 6`, `9 × 9`, `8 × 7`. Which ONE was slowest for you?

`24, 21, 45, 16, 16, 36, 49, 36, 81, 56`. Success = counting your own correct total and honestly naming your slowest fact to train next. (Common slow ones: `7 × 7`, `8 × 7`, `9 × 9`.)
Art hook Ten dots race around a circle, one per fact. The slowest dot trails behind and glows so you can literally see which fact is lagging; practise it and watch that dot catch up on your next run.

Make your own 6-second challenge. Write 5 times-table facts on cards, shuffle them, and have someone flip them one at a time. Score 1 point for each you answer correctly before they count to 6. What's a good score to aim for, and how could you make it fair?

A good aim is 5/5 correct within 6 seconds each (this mirrors the England MTC standard). Fairness ideas: count at the same speed on every card, keep the card covered until 'go', and mix easy and hard tables. This shows you understand what a fluency threshold actually measures.
Art hook A card-flip animation: each flipped card reveals a fact and a 6-second arc drains around its edge. A correct answer in time stamps the card gold and adds a dot to your score ring; after 5 cards the ring is a keepsake pattern of the round.

Reasoning: your friend answers `9 × 6` in 5 seconds by using `10 × 6 = 60` and then subtracting `6` to get `54`. Is that instant recall, or a clever strategy? And is using a strategy a bad thing?
Answer
It's a clever strategy, not yet instant recall — a fluent child just 'knows' `54`. But strategies are NOT bad: they're the bridge to fluency and a great backup when a fact slips. With practice the answer becomes automatic and the strategy is no longer needed.
Art hook Animate the strategy: a bar of 60 dots (10 groups of 6) shrinks by one group of 6 to reveal 54, then the 54 dots fade into a single glowing '54' — showing the strategy 'collapsing' into instant recall.
